Leyland Memorial Trophy
This competition is held every year in May at Somerset West in memory of
Colin Wyatt, Dale Kelly, Rod Turnbull and Sven Olsen who have passed away.
Colin worked at the Leyland motor assembly plant in Blackheath in the Western Cape
during the early years of LGS which originally started as an offshoot of Leyland's Social Club.
Colins involvement in LGS can be traced back to the early 1980's and he was Club
Captain for many years and insisted that the social part of golf was more important
than the actual golf. He succeeded in winning the Club Championships that were
held at Theewaterskloof in 2007. We all miss him.
Dale Kelly was Leyland's Fines Master and was a larger than life character and a friend to all who knew him.
He won just about every trophy and prize there was to win at Leyland, going on an impressive 4 year
winning streak of being the TopGun champ from 2017 to 2020. A true gentleman, competitive golfer, a great friend...
We all miss you Dale...never forgotten...thanks for the memories.
Roderick Turnbull was the Leyland Treasurer, secretary and administrator for the club for over 10 years.
He joined in 2001 and played 224 games . A real gentleman and always ready for a drink and a joke.
He played alot of golf , each time he walked the course , gave us his salute and wished us a good game.
Thanks for your commitment and endless support. Will seriously miss you around ...RIP
